There are still those times and places where the best way to light the fuse and blow everyone else into the weeds is by riding a hardtail. 29-inch wheels have revived the venerable double diamond design, and by mixing the smooth rolling hoops with a feathery 2.45-pound carbon fiber frame, Santa Cruz has come up with a potent race weapon.The handling of these big wheels has been beefed up with a tapered head tube up front and 142x12mm rear axle. Anyone who complains about a bad day climbing while riding this bike needs to find another sport. The Santa Cruz Highball is insanely light, razor sharp, and very nimble - yet surefooted, stiff as a plank, and designed to do two things: race and win.

Frame: Proprietary one-piece carbon fiber lay-up. Dropouts and disc tabs are molded directly into the frame to keep it lighter, stronger and stiffer. Tapered head tube, ultra-short chainstays and curved seat tube.

Shimano dropped weight by using a magnesium caliper and master cylinder with a carbon fiber lever blade and titanium fasteners. Underpowered brakes lead to defensive riding technique and, ultimately, to slower lap times. Enter the new XCR Race brake, which encourages racers to attack technical downhill sections with confidence, leaving the competition in the dust. Heat buildup is the enemy of any brake system, but the Shimano XTR M987 XCR disc brakes aluminum-backed brake pads and the industry's first full ceramic caliper piston help to dump heat and maintain consistent power. Each individual brake comes with brake lever, and caliper. Rotors are not included.

Hint for breaking-in: New disc brake pads require a certain break-in period in order to provide the full brake power. The following procedure has proved oneself: drag braking on a downhill until the brake power noticeably increases. Then let the brake rotor cool out. Afterwards do 20 full stops braking from a medium speed. Attention: the rotors get very hot, do not touch them!
