Santa Cruz Bike Frames

The Blur LT is one of those rare, hard to define machines, light and nimble enough to thrive in cut and dice woodsy singletrack riding, yet strong, plush and stable, and very much at home dropping down steep and scary terrain. And it climbs mighty nicely, too. It's a true jack-of-all-trades, with none of the compromises that usually implies. The LT has undergone a thorough revision, featuring a new frame design, new linkages and a new VPP suspension offering 140mm travel. The alloy lower link has grease ports and intricate labyrinth seals to operate in a clean, quiet, contaminant-free environment. The upper link is now molded from carbon fiber and the shock mount is isolated from the pivot axles. Beefy 15mm pivot axles bolt into the frame and feature aluminum collett-heads to secure the linkage, eliminating any chance of loosening or slop. If you could only have one bike, this would be the one.

Frame: Custom butted 6069 aluminum tube set with VPP linkage. Sealed cartridge bearings and replaceable dropouts. 140mm travel. Shock: Custom valve Fox RP23. Frame Weight (Med): 6 lbs. 3 oz. Sizes: SM-XL. Recommended Fork Travel: 140 - 160mm. Anodized colors:Black or brown.

It's just like the Blur LT that everybody loves, except it's lighter, stiffer, faster, more responsive and way stronger. In fact, the Santa Cruz Blur LT Carbon is the strongest frame Santa Cruz has ever built, bar none. And, it sports the stiffest chassis they've ever built. Whether you build up a lightweight trail flyer or take it to the hilt, you never have to ask if the frame can handle whatever travel fork you want to put on it…or if there are rider weight limits…or if its burly enough to handle a 6' drop to flat…or any of those niggling little questions that people are always asking about carbon fiber frames. The catchall answer to any of these "is it tough enough" questions is, "Yes." Think of the Blur LT Carbon as a hairy chested, all-mountain ass kicker…in a hockey mask...with a chain saw.

The Next Generation VPP Suspension is mighty fine stuff.

  • Patented Counter-rotating Link Design allows flexibility in manipulating shock rates for a huge diversity of uses and delivers incredible bump absorption without wallowing or bottoming.
  • The short links (carbon fiber upper, forged aluminum lower) and large diameter axles combine with angular contact bearings to improve chassis integrity and precision handling.
  • Grease ports in the lower link and tons of seals throughout provide superior protection that's low maintenance and easy to service.
  • Beefy 10 and15mm pivot axles bolt into the frame and feature aluminum collett head hardware to secure the linkage, eliminating any chance of loosening or slop.

Santa Cruz Carbon Technology and One-piece Lay-up.
Before embarking on the production of their new carbon frames, Santa Cruz set rigorous goals - the frames must pedal flawlessly, have virtually no flex, and be extremely strong, but ultra light! They also wanted to eliminate the perception that comfort and handling must be sacrificed to maximize efficiency and minimize weight. To achieve this, the engineers doubled their critical test targets and began making and breaking frames, all the while revising, rebuilding and repeating the process. They tried different modulus combinations and area reinforcement in an effort to make them stronger and stiffer. And then they tested them, and repeated the process again. And again.

All this testing and experimentation rendered a one-piece lay-up process that delivered some very important qualities. First, by laying up and curing the front triangle all at the same time (as opposed to assembling carbon pieces together) they were able to eliminate the overlapping joints that have to be bonded or wrapped with carbon, thus decreasing the amount of material used. Less material means less weight. Second, the unique lay-up process allows continuous fibers to be wrapped between the tubes. The resulting structure is better at distributing loads and absorbing impact energy. It also provides control of the outside and inside shape, delivering superb compaction of the fiber layers during the process. The complete elimination of gaps between the carbon layers keeps resin from migrating to the inside of the tubes. The inside structure boasts no gaps, no filler, no mystery material, no resin pools and no glue-patched sections. Essentially, no skeletons in the closet! Finally, Santa Cruz was able to truly integrate the shock mounts, pivot mounts, dropouts and disk brake tabs into the structure using all uni-directional carbon plies. The result is a clean, bold design that surpasses all of their original goals.

The Santa Cruz Butcher was designed to take a beating. The beefy hydroformed aluminum frame, with a supersized 1.5-1 1/8" tapered steer tube, is brought to life by six inches of remarkably simple, abuse-hungry APP (Actual Pivot Point) suspension. APP offers the reliability of a single pivot with the addition of one pair of links to make the rear wheel path more dynamic. There's very little to go wrong or break, but you still get the subtleties of a VPP-like feel, without the expense.

Frame: Hydroformed 6000 series aluminum with 6 inches (150mm) of rear travel via Santa Cruz's proprietary APP suspension. APP uses a high and forward pivot point located on the down tube, in front of and above the bottom bracket. A pair of links is used to create a variable shock rate similar to that found on the VPP machines. Frame includes sealed cartridge linkage bearings, replaceable dropout, and cable stops for a dropper seat post. Shock: Fox R. Frame Weight( Med): 6.73 lbs.Sizes: SM-XL. Recommended Fork Travel: 140-160mm. Colors: Seabright blue, black, red, white, yellow, or chocolate.

The Santa Cruz Nickel is a perfect bike for those days when you have to flip a coin to decide where you want to ride. With a long top tube and snappy pedaling manners, it's a climb-happy, nimble bike with a sure-footed geometry that begs to go claim tall peaks in the backcountry. And with five inches (125mm) of sophisticated APP (Actual Pivot Point) rear suspension, the Nickel is designed to eat rocks, roots and jumps with all the ability of longer travel bikes. It also does a mighty fine job of whipping the descents into shape.

The Santa Cruz Carbon Nomad walks the line between an all-mountain trail rider and a gravity shredder, designed to go uphill just as well as it goes down. This impressive carbon frame has a noticeably different silhouette than its aluminum predecessor. The Carbon Nomad is beefed up and smoothed out in all the right places, with substantially fatter chainstays and a 1.5" headtube, dismissing any misgivings about a carbon all-mountain frame not being strong enough.

This is the 4th carbon mountain bike frame produced by Santa Cruz, and as such, they were able to expertly apply their design and production experience to trim 1.5 lbs off the frame, while making it stronger and stiffer. The entire front triangle was laid up and cured as one piece instead of assembling or bonding separate carbon tubes together. Additionally, the underside of the downtube features eight layers of carbon fiber and has an added impact absorbent protection strip, which is also used on the drive-side chain stay. Arguably stronger than the original aluminum version, the Nomad retains its identity with consistent frame geometry and patented VPP suspension, featuring 160mm of rear travel. The frame is equipped with a Fox DHX 5.0 rear shock and intended for use with a single-crown, 160mm travel fork. The 1.5" headtube keeps the front end stout and steadfast, allowing Nomad to be treated with a bit more abuse than frames using taper-steerer forks. The frame retains a standard 135mm, quick-release-friendly rear dropout. White with black decals or a matte carbon color with gold pinstripe decals.

Frame: UD carbon fiber one-piece lay-up with Next Generation VPP suspension. 160mm of rear travel. Replaceable derailleur hanger. Integrated ISCG05 tabs and grease ports in aluminum lower link. Shock: Fox DHX 5.0 Air. Frame Weight (Med): 6.1 lbs. (Medium) Sizes: S-XL. Recommended Fork Travel: 160 to 180mm. Colors: White with black decals or a matte carbon color with gold pinstripe decals.

Earmarked with the latest VPP suspension and a sophisticated carbon fiber chassis, the rock solid Santa Cruz Tallboy 29" carbon frame is designed to be insanely flex-free and fun handling. Using a unique, three-process construction, this curvaceous carbon fiber frame becomes more than just a pretty face, offering amazing stiffness and strength while keeping a feathery-light weight of 5 lbs. 6 oz. (Med). The Tallboy was designed to use a 100-120mm fork, and with 100mm of rear travel, this 29er delivers clean, neutral pedaling without bob or feedback, and plush, bump-eating suspension across the board. Includes a tapered headset.

Frame: Carbon fiber chassis with massive chainstays and rear triangle, tapered head tube, carbon fiber upper link, 15mm aluminum pivot axles (2 lower-1 upper) rotating on angular contact bearings, titanium hardware, grease ports, replaceable dropouts and 100mm of Next Generation VPP suspension. ISO brake mounts accommodate up to 185mm rotors. Shock: Fox RP23. Frame Weight (Med): 5 lbs. 6oz. Recommended Fork Travel: 100-120mm. Wheel Size: 29". Seatpost: 30.9mm Sizes: MD-XXL. Colors: Matte black or orange.

More information:

The Tallboy is designed to use 100-120mm forks and handles best in one of these configurations. However, it is strong enough to handle 140mm forks. So, if you really want, you can go there.

The Tallboy has 100mm of plush VPP rear suspension. The lower link features the same 15mm aluminum pivot axles, titanium hardware, angular contact bearings, grease ports, durability and ease of maintenance that's found on the Blur LT. There's also a carbon fiber upper link, with the same trick hardware and angular contact bearings on the big axle. The frame uses a 6.5" x 1.5" (165x38mm) rear shock. Mounting hardware on both ends is 22mm wide (21.84mm to be exact), with an 8mm through hole. The shock is a very common size, and there are plenty of other models on the market that will fit.

The Tallboy requires a bottom swing (high clamp), top pull, 34.9mm front derailleur. Both SRAM and Shimano make models that work well.

Santa Cruz never likes to make promises as to the largest tire that will fit the Tallboy, since tire dimensions vary so much between manufacturers. But, pretty much any 2.35" tire will work.

Tallboy is compatible with the new Sram XX group. The XX crankset is available in a 166Q version that provides the proper clearance for Tallboy.

A final thought:

Big wheels work well for a lot of people, but are a godsend for the big and tall set. As such, Santa Cruz offers the Tallboy all the way up to XXL - which comes with an appropriately sized 25.9 top tube and 45.6 wheelbase. All of the frame sizes feature the same short, stiff 17.5 chainstays.
