To say there's been buzz about the new 5800 groupset from Shimano would be a bit of an understatement. Since it's first rumors came out, we've been getting calls, emails and chats daily about when it might arrive. And here it is, Ultegra level performance at 105 level prices, fresh off the factory line.
The biggest obvious upgrade here is going to be the 11 speed cassette- giving you just that much more of a spread to choose from to dial in your cadence and step up your cycling game. The real determining thing you'll have to keep in mind is whether your rear wheel's freehub body can accommodate the slightly wider cassette. Most of the wheels made within the past two years are 11 compatible, but you'll want to check with your manufacturer to make absolutely sure.
Numerous other upgrades have made their way into the mix with this newly affordable 11 speed group- light action defined click engagement shifting, compact comfort ergonomic shifter grips, and new spring mechanisms in the front and rear derailleurs for starters.
Then there are the cranks, which can easily swap between chainrings to dial in that perfect compact/mid-compact/standard gearing to your liking. A proven, four arm style transfers power exceptionally well, as proven by the older brothers Ultegra and Dura Ace.
To top it all off, the brakes have been redesigned to allow for 28c tires and provide a whopping 10 percent more stopping power.
In all, this is one amazing groupset at a downright phenomenal price point, get it while you can.
