Shimano's Freeride Design

Major issues with freeride and dowhill style pedals are the traction pins. They are set screws with a headless, internal Allen drive, that is easily damaged by rocks and impacts while riding, and at that point the Allen head would no longer be usable. For the PD-MX80 Saint Pedals, the pins screw in from the back of the platform. This solved the issue of not being able to remove pins once damaged. To work around an issue of pin height, Shimano includes washers with the PD-MX80s so you can lower pins where necessary and fine tune the pedals to your shoes and personal preference. Cool huh?
