The "1X" paradigm has hit the mountain bike world en masse, causing plenty out there to rethink the idea of hefting around a bulky front derailler, front shifter and extra chainring (or two). Enter Wolf Tooth Components, a manufacturer specializing in retrofitting existing 10 speed drivetrains to be 1x10 compatible, thanks to their dedicated front "Drop-Stop" chainring and a super huge chainring added to the rear cassette.

Thanks to their "Drop Stop" design chainrings, you can say goodbye to pesky dropped chains and the clunky chainguides and catchers of yesteryear. Just couple this with a clutch style derailleur and you'll be good to go. They utilize 7075 Aluminum and a design that alternates between narrow and wide tooth spacing that successfully grips the chain and keeps it in place even in the rockiest of conditions.

These will fit most common cranksets using 104 BCD mounting but if you have a Shimano Double M785 XT or M665 SLX double crankset you'll want to follow these instructions from Wolf Tooth to get them to fit. Also, even if you're running a 9 speed drivetrain, plan to use a 10 speed chain (it will shift fine), as the 9 speed chain fits too loosely on the ring.
